The Monoclonal Antibody Facility of the University of Georgia (UGA-MAF) is available for any investigator who has a need for its services. This includes UGA Faculty and Staff, Georgia University System affiliated Colleges and Universities, educational and research facilities from outside Georgia, and private industry. Located in Room A410 of the Davison Life Sciences Complex on the University of Georgia campus, the facility is staffed by three full-time personnel.

The facility is equipped to immunize and monitor mice, perform fusions of mouse spleen cells and myelomas to generate antibody-producing hybridomas, isolate and propagate selected cell clones, preserve these cell lines in liquid nitrogen, and produce and purify quantities of antibody. The facility can produce antibodies to synthetic peptides, haptens coupled to carrier proteins, fusion proteins, and more conventional antigens.

The hybridomas resulting from the fusions are screened for antibody production by ELISA. Then, the selected hybridomas are propagated in tissue culture flasks by in vitro techniques rather than using additional mice to produce ascites fluid.

In addition to helping researchers develop new hybridomas, the UGA MAF can also expand frozen hybridomas to produce frozen cell stocks and purified antibodies.

Generally, for clients at UGA or other University System of Georgia (USG) institutions, the cost for a standard immunization project requiring only one fusion that results in adequate hybridoma development is $3000.00 USD.

 

Expected Timetable

  • Immunization of mice – 4 to 6 months
  • Fusion to testing – 2 to 3 weeks
  • Testing and selection of best cell lines – 4 weeks
  • Cryopreservation and production of antibody from chosen lines – 4 weeks
  • Antibody concentration, purification, and release testing - 2 weeks
  • The approximate total time would be 6 to 8 months for monoclonal antibody development to final product.

 

Deliverables

  • The client will be asked to provide 2 to 4 mg of immunogen
  • The anticipated result is to preserve 2 cell lines from each fusion, and that cost is included in the fusion price.
  • Deliverables will include 7 cryopreserved vials of the hybridoma(s) developed (with optional storage available) and 10 mg of antibody from each cell line preserved.
